Picterus® - A Smartphone App to Monitor Newborn Jaundice at Home
Picterus is a novel solution for the challenges of screening and monitoring of jaundice in babies. Health professionals and parents can download the Picterus App and then, using the Picterus Calibration Card, the baby's jaundice level can be estimated, simply by taking a picture.
Picterus works by adjusting for the smartphone camera, the lighting and the skin tone. The image is sent to cloud-based servers and, provided it passes quality control, results are returned to the user's phone instantly.
Picterus has been validated in all skin types, and tested globally. It is a screening test, so if the result requires further clinical evaluation, this will be indicated.
Picterus® - Designed for Health Care Professionals and Parents
Picterus is licenced for use by Health Care Professionals (HCPs) and parents.
Babies are often discharged home after uncomplicated deliveries within 24-48 hours of birth. However jaundice, the yellowing of the skin in least 60% typically arises around day 2-3. Bilirubin is what causes jaundice.
Whilst most jaundice is harmless and fades away without treatment, very high levels of bilirubin can be dangerous and even fatal. Most of the time, it is parents who are responsible for reporting the presence of jaundice to their HCP, who will then normally perform a physical check and a test.
But how "yellow" is normal? Even experienced HCPs cannot be certain using visual assessment alone. In babies with pigmented skin, this is even harder.
Picterus makes screening simple and repeatable for parents and HCPs.
